Malware

Luckily I have not yet been the target of a phishing scam. Before learning this lesson I didn't even know such scams existed although I have heard about general computer viruses that cause unwanted advertisement pop-ups, computer freezes or deletion of files etc...

I always try not to provide my personal information on the internet. I am still nervous about using online banking so I only check my accounts on computers which are protected with reputable anti-virus software such as Norton and always try to do tasks there quickly. I usually don't open emails if I don't know the person who sent it.

Mashup - revisited

I can see that mashups are a very useful tool for businesses as well as libraries in terms of marketing and promoting. For instance, using Google maps and flickr to mashup is an excellent way to promote our library services. For individuals we can combine photos/videos and clips/information from holiday trips etc. and add them to specific locations we went to, which we can mark on Google maps. It is fun and can be another way to retain valuable memories.

Most of the mashups that were introduced this week are really useful, such as Walkable, Where to live, bkkeepr, and Visual Headlines which looks very artistic and professional.

Instant communication

I have tried Instant messaging in Gmail & yahoo. It was fun, but it's hard for people to be online at the same time. Also as I invited people from two different accounts (both Gmail and Yahoo) we kept missing each other, so when I was logged into the Gmail account they were responding to my yahoo invite and vice versa.

I have also tried Skype, using video chat and also via typing. I was impressed. I planned to make a PC to PC call to the US, but as Superchicken77 commented there were costs for that which I will need to investigate first.

I believe instant messaging would be very good for library communication with patrons as it feels more friendly and you can get a quicker response as opposed to emailing. They can also save money which would otherwise have been used for making a phone call and while the patron is waiting for an answer they can easily go to do something else.

I think that Skype would also be very useful for conferences, training and meeting with others from different locations at the same time etc.

More with Google docs.

I found that the "100 great Google docs tips for students & educators" was very useful. Some handy tips include:
* working off-line which allows us to continue our work without Internet access in times when the Internet connection is down
* Saving as different file types
* Translating foreign text and even whole webpages using the fantastic Google translate tool (Google translates to other languages which you select at the same time you are typing)
* Using reference tools.

One of the more useful features which I really I like, is the ability to collaborate with others, that is, we can work on the same document in a group without actually meeting each other. It is a real time saver and the other magical feature is we can edit our document even when it is already published.

Google Docs is also a great place for us to back up our documents so that we can access them anywhere provided we have a computer and Internet access. This allows us to avoid common problems such as USBs being left behind or incompatible systems...

Most of the features sound easy to use and in addition we can also ask other users for help through the Google forum.

Getting organized : customised home pages and Google tools

The i-Google is very easy to customise. I can move the gadgets around by clicking on them then hold and drag them to where I want. There are lots of useful gadgets such as the weather gadget, date & time gadget that allows you to search times of certain locations in the world, the Top news gadget, Currency converter gadget, Best place to go gadget, and Motormouth petrol PriceTracker.

There are lots of beautiful themes for you to select. You can have your own pets moving around your homepage (you can pick a pet by clicking on the "add it now" button belonging to a certain pet gadget). I chose two turtles and they are cute.

I-Google is a very handy tool where you can group different social networks together and therefore we can find sites easily, check out updated information such as subscribed RSS feeds, or people followed on Twitter, or a blog, etc. You can also check email and play with your pets all at once from the one screen.

Here is a screen shot of my I-Google homepage to share with everyone.
